What Is Autism? A Look at Autism Acceptance Month
Autism/autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a broad range of conditions that challenge social skills, behaviors, speech, and ways of communicating with others. The environment and genetics can also influence many types of autism.
According to Autism Speaks:
Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. People with autism learn, think, and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.
According to the CDC, autism affects 1 in 44 children in the U.S. an estimated of 2.21% of adults in the U.S. have ASD. Autism is hard to diagnose without a professional evaluation.
However, here are a few signs of autism at any age:
Loss of speech or social skills
Eye contact avoidance
Difficulty with emotional intelligence
Delayed language development
Resistance to minor changes like routine and surroundings
Repetitive behaviors
Intense reactions to multi-sensory input
